Understanding SEO for Bloggers

If you have a blog, you’re probably aware that great content doesn’t always guarantee a massive following. Why? Because even the best content needs to be discoverable. Even now in the age of AI, SEO is just as critical as ever.

It all starts with keywords: In my opinion, to understand the full potential of SEO for your blog, you need to start with a foundational understanding of keyword research.

This is where the real magic happens for boosting your rankings.

Keywords are the word for word searches your audience is making in Google to find what they’re looking for.

Master Keyword Research and You’ll Master the Rankings!

If you want to connect with your readers, you’re going to need to speak their language. That means understanding their interests, their passions, their pain points, and the actual words they type to make their searches.

Know your audience: This is probably the most important part of keyword research. Who are you writing for? Are you writing for tech geeks, passionate foodies, or fitness buffs? Knowing this allows you to tailor your content and keywords to match their search habits.

Use the tools!: Have no fear, technology is here to help you out. Tools such as Google’s Keyword Planner, SEMrush, or Ahrefs can provide a ton of insight into keyword popularity, related terms, and even what your competitors might be ranking for.

Find a balance: Aim for keywords that are relevant to your content, have a decent search volume (enough people are looking for it), but aren’t so competitive that they’re out of reach for a newer blog or a blogger without massive SEO firepower.

Go for the specifics: Go after long-tail keywords, this means phrases that are more specific and often longer. They might have a lower search volume, but they’re also less competitive and usually signal a much stronger intent from the searcher—meaning they might be closer to taking action, like subscribing or making a purchase.

Placing keywords naturally into content: Once you’ve got your golden list of keywords, it’s time to weave them seamlessly into your content. This is how Google will know to serve your content as the answer to your audience’s searches. But remember, finesse is key. Never keyword stuff! Focus on value, answering the question or topic at hand, and writing naturally.

Now that you’re armed with the right keywords, the next step is creating content that’s not only interesting but also set up to climb those search engine ranks.

Creating Content That Delivers

This is the fun part, but there’s a delicate dance you’re about to perform. It’s not about stuffing those keywords into your blog posts to make Google serve them up as answers. It’s also about bringing the value, making your content engaging, and easy on the eyes.

Quality reigns supreme: Google is onto you quickly if you’re just keyword stuffing and writing low-effort content. Make your focus delivering value. Bring your unique perspective and insight to the table. Remember, you’re passionate about your niche, so show it!

Go with the flow: Incorporating your keywords should feel natural and fluid. I’m going to show you the must-have places to place your keywords for Google in just a second, but the rest of our content should just flow easily and naturally.

We love lists: Don’t shy away from using bullet points. They break up text, making it more easy to absorb for your readers. Also, having an understanding of how to use your headlines can signal to search engines the hierarchy of your content. Use an h1 for your title, an h2 for the more important headlines, h3’s for subheadings below your h2s, and so on.

There’s lots of ways to deliver a message: Think images, videos, infographics, and even podcasts. Not all in one article, of course, but understand that different types of content will connect with different types of learners. Your audience loves video! What about creating your own YouTube channel and publishing videos to place in your own articles? Brilliant!

On-Page Optimization: Where to Place Your Keywords

On-page optimization is all about signaling to Google (and your audience) exactly what your content is about and elevating the user experience. This allows your content to be served up quickly and correctly as the answer to your audience’s searches.

Optimize your title: Every blog post should have an optimized title tag includes the focus keyword. This isn’t just important for SEO, it also gives readers an immediate idea of what your post is about.

Optimize your URL: URLs are sometimes overlooked, but they contribute to SEO too. Place your keyword in your URL and it instantly tells both your audience and search engines what to expect from your article.

Your audience doesn’t want to wait: Don’t worry too, too much about page speeds and fast loading websites at the start of your blogging journey. Content is king and page speed comes into play later. But do know this: a slow-loading blog WILL push readers away and harm your rankings. Tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights can help you pinpoint and fix speed issues.

Optimize for mobile: Mobile-friendliness isn’t optional anymore, it’s mandatory. With more everyone browsing on their phones, your blog needs to be mobile responsive and accessible across all devices. This means clickable elements should be easy to interact with and your content should look good on any screen size.

Nailing your linking structure: I can’t emphasize enough the importance of a solid internal linking structure. It keeps readers on your site longer by encouraging them to explore deeper into your content. It also helps lower your bounce rate and signals to search engines that your site has depth and value.

The deeper your audience goes into your site, the more likely they are to convert!

Make your content shareable: If you can make your content shareable, you’re golden. Include social sharing buttons to make it a no-brainer for readers to spread the word about your blog posts.

You can always adjust your approach down the road, but having these on-page elements in place sets you on the right path for improved search engine rankings. Now, let’s pull back the curtain on how you keep track of all of your hard work and dive into analytics.

Knowing What’s Working and What’s Not

After implementing all these SEO strategies, how will you know if they’re actually working? That’s where analytics comes into play.

Main metrics to watch: Analytics never end, but a few indispensable ones are your organic traffic, bounce rate, conversion rate, and keyword rankings. These data points give insights into your audience’s behavior and how well your content is performing in search results.

Marathon, not a sprint: Don’t go nuts over day-to-day fluctuations. SEO is a long-term game, and your focus should be on trends over several months. Google Analytics is a fantastic tool for bloggers to keep an eye on these trends and gather valuable information.

Know your algorithms: Google often tweaks its algorithms, and those changes can affect your blog’s ranking. Adapting your strategy to these changes is key, but don’t lose it if an algorithm update temporarily tanks your rankings. Learn where you can improve, but remember the high quality content will usually rise right back to the top.

I have been trying to get my head around the complexities of SEO, and your details here were both practical and seem easy enough to put in place. I have started applying a few of your tips, especially around keyword research and optimizing content, and I am already seeing some improvements (all be it small) in my rankings.

Do you have any advice on balancing SEO efforts while at the same time keeping a natural, engaging writing style for readers?

    Hi Eric,

You mentioned that keywords are king so getting it right is critical. I had never used the Google Keywords Planner, so I tried it after reading your post, but it didn’t seem intuitive to me. It suggested only two items to me from my input. Any tips on how to get the best out of the tool?

Google keyword planner is just one example of the many keyword research tools out there. I personally use Jaaxy or go directly to Google itself to find low competition keywords. Thanks for the comment!
