Understanding Dropshipping
Understanding dropshipping is the first step to realizing how doable it can be. What are the challenges? Why such a high fail rate?
- Dropshipping Definition: Dropshipping in a nutshell is selling products without holding inventory. You’re the middle man, acting as an go-between for suppliers and customers.
- Role as an Intermediary: In dropshipping, you take customer orders and forward them to suppliers, who then ship products directly to customers, eliminating the need for you to manage storage, inventory, or shipping.
- Dropshipping Process: The process involves finding a willing supplier (manufacturer, wholesaler, or distributor), setting up an online store, adding products, and forwarding customer orders to the supplier for direct shipping.
- Minimal Capital Investment: One of the huge upsides of dropshipping is the low capital investment needed to get started and, since you’re just a middle man, no need to invest in inventory.
- Focus on Marketing and Traffic: With inventory and shipping managed by suppliers, your big focus is on marketing the store and driving website traffic to it.
- Limited Shipping Control: The downside to dropshipping is that you have less control over shipping and products. Any delays or damages from the supplier to products shipped to your customers can greatly impact your business reputation.
- Working with Reliable Suppliers: Partnering with dependable suppliers and providing excellent customer service helps mitigate those shipping control issues.
Let’s Get Started! Steps to Starting Your Dropshipping Business
So how do you get started dropshipping? it’s a nice mix of traditional business and online business. With dropshipping, you don’t need to worry about managing inventory or shipping products to customers. Instead, you work with suppliers who handle those tasks for you.
Here are the key steps to starting a dropshipping business:
- Niche Selection: Begin by choosing a niche for your dropshipping business, focusing on areas you are passionate about and that have a sufficient audience base. Just like with affiliate marketing, choosing a niche you’re passionate about gives you a key understanding of your target audience’s needs along with their pain points.
- Niche Research Tools: Use tools like Google Trends and Google Keyword Planner to research and understand what people are searching for in different niches. Keyword research tools can also help you find the key searches your target audience is making so you can focus on those needs.
- Finding Suppliers: This is a really big one. Look for suppliers who offer high-quality products at competitive prices. Some tried and true methods include using online directories, attending trade shows, and contacting manufacturers directly.
- Supplier Reputation: Choose suppliers with a good industry reputation to ensure quality and reliability. Remember, your biggest headaches will come from inventory not getting where it needs to go. Supplier reputation is huge for your dropshipping business.
- Setting Up an Online Store: Utilize ecommerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, or Magento to set up your store, with Shopify being a popular choice for its ease of use and features. Building a website for your online store is easier than you think even if you’ve never done it before.
- Domain Name Registration: Select and register a domain name for your online store. Not all hosting providers are the same. Find one that doesn’t break the bank, but also give you plenty of security and support.
- Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Understand and comply with legal considerations, including business registration, licenses, permits, tax laws, and insurance. A simple Google search can tell you how early in your business journey you need to lock these down. You may consider consulting with a lawyer or accountant to ensure you have full compliance with legal obligations.
Managing Your Day to Day Dropshipping Operations
So as a dropshipper, what should you expect with your day to day operations? These are pretty straightforward. Here are the key areas to focus on:
- Ease of Order Fulfillment: Dropshipping simplifies order fulfillment, as suppliers are the ones handling product shipping and delivery. This takes the need for packing and shipping orders off your shoulders.
- Monitoring Order Status: Since you don’t have to worry about shipping, your focus will turn to monitoring the status of orders to ensure they are fulfilled promptly and efficiently.
- Importance of Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service is essential. You’ll need to be responsive to customer inquiries and address any issues with orders, returns, or packaging.
- Supplier-Driven Customer Support: While suppliers do handle most customer service aspects in dropshipping, maintaining availability for direct customer interaction can help your reputation and your business..

Show Me the Money! Costs & Profitability of Dropshipping?
Dropshipping can be extremely lucrative when you factor in the very low startup costs. What kinds of costs and profits can you expect as a dropshipper?
- Low Capital Requirement for Dropshipping: Dropshipping requires minimal capital investment, as there’s no need to purchase inventory upfront. As any business owner will tell you, when you can keep your overhead low your chances for profitability grow.
- Direct Cost Tied to Sales: Costs you do have will be directly related to sales, meaning you only pay for the products that are sold. Inventory for traditional businesses make up a huge portion of costs, not to mention the headaches around getting that inventory sold. As a dropshipper you don’t have to worry about that.
- Ongoing Operational Costs: Outside of products sold, be prepared to cover ongoing costs like website hosting, advertising, and payment processing fees.
- Essential Profit Margin Calculation: Calculate your profit margins to gauge your dropshipping business’s profitability; A simple equation is profit margin equals the selling price minus the cost of goods sold (COGS). You can utilize profit margin calculators or manually compute profit margins to understand financial health. For instance, if COGS is $10 and the selling price is $20, the profit margin is 50%.
- Scalability of Dropshipping: Dropshipping is highly scalable as your profits increase, allowing the addition of new products and suppliers without inventory management concerns. Remember, as sales increase, so do costs. Always do regular monitoring of profit margins and make adjustments as needed..
