Your Niche, Your Audience
So, where do you begin when it comes to building a YouTube channel? Short answer: with your niche and your audience. This is going to shape what your YouTube channel becomes.
Follow your passion: You want to choose something that resonates with you and has a community of viewers seeking out that content. What are your interests? What’s your passion? There are a ton of people out there with those exact interests, so be their representative and they’ll follow!
Now, who’s watching?: Researching your audience and checking out the competition gives you instant edge. Understand the demographics of the audience you’re after and see what similar content creators are doing. This step isn’t about copying; it’s about helping yourself stand out in a crowded space.
Be realistic: Yes, there are a few viral content creators who seem to have gotten “YouTube famous” overnight. But for the vast, VAST majority of YouTubers, it takes time. Focus on delivering value! And, while you’re at it, set realistic goals and expectations for your channel’s growth.
Up next is perfecting the technical setup and establishing your brand. This is where we start rolling up our sleeves and getting to work!
Behind the Scenes: Technical Setup and Branding
You don’t need to splurge for all the fanciest gear out there when you’re first starting out, but you do want to cross all your t’s and dot your i’s so you deliver consistent value to your audience. Here’s how you’re going to set up your channel for success from the technical side of things and develop your brand identity.
What’s in a name?: Let’s talk about choosing the right channel name first. It’s the cornerstone of your brand. It needs to be catchy, memorable, while also giving potential viewers a hint at what to expect from you. When I chose the name of my YouTube channel it was all about the message I’m delivering through my content. You’re following me on YouTube right? Work From Your Laptop on YouTube.
Setting up your YouTube account: This is a very straightforward process, but it’s important to think about your target audience as you do this. Use keywords that relate to your content so that you’re easier to find. Think about the visuals too. You’re going to want a solid logo and banner that represent your brand. First impressions count.
Where to go for your logo and channel banner?: If you’re not the most creative person or you just need a bit of inspiration there are plenty of options for you. I’d start with ChatGPT for a logo. It’s spectacular at brainstorming based on the details you input. Canva is great if you have a bit more creativity, and there’s always Fiverr for finding someone with artistic expertise to create the perfect channel banner.
Let’s talk gear: A reliable camera, good lighting, and clear audio are your bread and butter. Don’t break the bank; start with what you can afford and upgrade over time. In fact, many successful YouTubers (including me) have started with nothing more than a smartphone and natural lighting. Perfect!
Don’t sleep on video editing: Picking the right video editing software is critical. Choose a video editing tool that you’re comfortable with. There are many free or inexpensive options that are user-friendly and packed with features. And don’t sweat it, your editing skills will grow with practice, trust me! Don’t be afraid of the learning curve, it’s totally natural. I work with a Mac, so Screenflow for Mac worked for me.
You’re almost ready to dive into creating content! This is where the fun begins. With your setup dialed in, you’ll be better equipped to focus on what really matters: making great videos that your audience will love.
The Fun Part: Videos Your Audience Can’t Get Enough Of
When you create content it’s not just about filling space on your YouTube channel, it’s about connecting with your viewers and keeping them coming back for more.
The art of storytelling: When I start planning my videos, I try to think about the story they tell. A well-told story will make even educational content hard to turn away from and turn a simple vlog into a “must-watch”. Pay attention to your lighting, sound, and audio too. A great video can easily be ruined if it’s poorly produced.
Focus on consistency: Consistency is really important when it comes to growing your channel. But don’t rush to publish low quality content just to stick to your posting schedule. Always maintain a high standard of quality. Balancing quality and consistency will help you build a loyal viewership that knows what to expect and looks forward to your next video.
Grab their attention!: Thumbnails, titles, and descriptions are your silent (or not so silent) pitch to grab potential viewers. An attention grabbing thumbnail can make someone pause mid-scroll, while a clear and catchy title can be the difference between a click and a pass. Don’t undersell your video content, in fact, don’t be afraid to be over the top! Go grab those viewers!
After you get that momentum moving forward, you don’t want to let off the gas. Next, I’m going to show you how to grow your audience by engaging with them and applying smart SEO strategies, something that often goes overlooked on YouTube.
YouTube SEO – Strategies for Building Your Audience
Let’s talk about some strategies that are critical for growing your audience, ranking on YouTube, and building YouTube authority.
SEO is a game changer: When you understand the power of keywords, video tags, and descriptions, you suddenly catapult yourself into the YouTube stratosphere. For me, it took my videos straight to the top, and that makes a HUGE difference almost overnight. There’s ways to learn YouTube keyword research without tools and then there’s awesome YouTube tools like Tubebuddy and VidIQ to help you along.
Always engage!: No one wants to be ignored! Engaging and interacting with your audience will explode their loyalty. This means responding to ALL their comments (even the bad ones, but not the profane ones, just delete those), starting conversations via the community tab, and even featuring Q&A sessions in your videos. It shows that you highly value them and it creates a living, breathing fan club around your content.
Collaboration opportunities: Partnering with fellow YouTubers can offer access to whole new audiences and fresh content. Just be sure to choose collaborators who are highly relevant within your niche and your brand. Why not take a look at who your super fans are following? They can literally have a fangasm when two of their favorite channels form a collab.
Don’t sleep on analytics: I’m not a big “analytics” guy, but YouTube really does provide excellent analytics tools to help you track your progress. For me, I feel they get it right when it comes to metrics that matter. Pay close attention to watch time, viewer demographics, and engagement rates. These metrics hold the key to fine-tuning your content strategy for sustained growth.
Each of these strategies so far is a stepping stone to a successful channel. And that’s going to include how you ultimately turn this passion into profit, which is what I’ll tackle in the next section.
Turning YouTube Passion Into YouTube Profit
You’ve put in the hours, published engaging content, and have started building an audience that’s tuning into your YouTube channel regularly. Now, it’s time to cash in! Trust me, creating a YouTube channel is well worth it!
YouTube’s Partner Program (YPP): This program allows you to earn money directly from YouTube through ads, channel memberships, and Super Chat features during live streams. Believe me, it’s AWESOME! As you can see from the image above, a single video can literally earn you thousands. To qualify, you’ll need to meet certain thresholds including 500 subscribers, 3 valid uploads in the last 90 days and 3000 watch hours over the last 12 months. Don’t worry, publish quality content on a regular basis and you’ll get there quicker than you think!
Affiliate marketing: Beyond ads, think about conversions. Affiliate marketing and YouTube go hand in hand. Find the highly relevant products and services related to your niche, think about the value they can bring your audience, and then do a high quality review and place your affiliate links in your video descriptions. Your audience will thank you by following your affiliate link and making that purchase because it’s EXACTLY what they’ve been looking for. Trust me, you don’t have to “sell” your audience on services that will bring them real value. That’s the key!
Sweet merch and swag: Then there’s the exciting world of merchandise. If you have a brand that your audience loves, merchandise can be a direct way to capitalize on that loyalty. From t-shirts to mugs, there are plenty of options that can be reflective of your brand identity and extend your reach.
Exclusive content: Some creators turn to Patreon or other crowdfunding platforms for a more predictable income stream. This allows your most dedicated fans to support you directly, often in exchange for exclusive content or perks.
Your audience comes first!: Throughout this process, it’s ultra important to keep your audience’s trust at the forefront. Don’t sell them out or alienate them by only seeing them as dollar signs. Any monetization strategy should be put together with your audience’s best interests first. Bring real value, make it worth their time and money to follow you, and watch your viewership explode. This isn’t anything new to them, they’re used to monetization, so just make it worth it.

Hi Eric.
I really enjoyed this article. It was very informative and broken down into easily digestible sections. I also thought it was brilliant that you provided answers to some of – what would I assume to be – the top questions people have asked you.
I do have one question for you. Have you found that there is a “perfect” length for videos on YouTube that, along with story-telling type information, would garner the longest/most watched minutes?
I look forward to hearing your answer as an expert in this area.
Thank you,
~Scott

There’s no perfect length. It all depends on the topic at hand. Some 5 minute videos will convert great for you over and over, and some long form video will do the same. I have one video that’s around an hour in length because it’s basically a massive FAQ video and that video averages around 20 minutes per view which is CRAZY high.

I have not started my YouTube channel yet, well I created it, but I have not gone any further than that.
What is holding me back, FEAR! I am camera shy, and not really sure about the whole YouTube thing. I have been told that you can be successful on YouTube without being in your videos, but I really want to remain as transparent as possible with my audience, and in my opinion, that means being the ‘Face’ of my YouTube channel as well.
Any advice for this crazy old bird that cannot seem to get in front of the camera?
Thanks, Stacie

Start with just your voice. I didn’t show my face probably for the first year or so and my videos were ranking number one and getting major views and conversions. I just screencast and voiced over with quick little 4-6 minute videos and it worked. Baby steps. 👍🏼
