Choosing the right blogging platform 2025

When it comes to starting your own blog, one of the most crucial decisions you’ll have to make is choosing the right blogging platform. In this post, I’ll explore some popular blogging platforms, discuss their features, and help you determine which one is perfect for you.

How do you choose the best blogging platform for your needs?

Choosing the best blogging platform depends on your goals, technical skills, design preferences, and budget. Compare features like flexibility, customization, ease of use, and SEO potential before deciding.

WordPress

WordPress is the most popular blogging platform in the world. It’s known for its flexibility, ease of use, and extensive customization options. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced blogger, WordPress caters to all levels of expertise.

Additionally, WordPress offers a wide range of themes and plugins that allow you to create a unique and professional-looking blog without any coding skills.

Blogger

Blogger is a straightforward blogging platform owned by Google. It’s an excellent choice for beginners who want a simple and easy-to-use platform to share their thoughts and ideas.

While it may not have as many customization options as WordPress, Blogger is perfect for those looking to start a blog quickly without any hassle. Plus, it’s free to use and seamlessly integrates with other Google services.

Wix

Wix is a website builder that also offers blogging functionality. It’s known for its drag-and-drop interface, which makes it easy to create a stunning blog without any design skills.

Wix provides a variety of templates for you to choose from, and you can customize your blog to suit your preferences easily. While Wix is user-friendly and visually appealing, it may not offer the same level of flexibility as WordPress in terms of advanced customization.

Squarespace

Squarespace is a popular all-in-one platform that caters to bloggers, businesses, and creatives. It provides beautifully designed templates that are perfect for showcasing visual content.

Squarespace is ideal for bloggers who prioritize aesthetics and want a hassle-free blogging experience. However, if you’re looking for extensive customization options or blogging for SEO purposes, Squarespace may not be the best choice.

Medium

Medium is a unique platform that focuses on the storytelling aspect of blogging. It allows you to reach a broader audience and connect with readers from around the world.

Medium is known for its clean and distraction-free writing environment, making it perfect for writers who want to focus solely on their content. While Medium lacks some advanced blogging features, its simplicity and social aspect make it a compelling choice for many bloggers.

Ghost

Ghost is a minimalist blogging platform that is perfect for bloggers who prioritize speed and simplicity. It’s lightweight and fast, making it an excellent choice for those who want a no-nonsense blogging experience.

Ghost offers a clean and modern writing interface, along with features like SEO tools and membership options. If you’re looking for a straightforward platform that puts the focus on your content, Ghost might be the right choice for you.

Great article, Eric! I especially like that you emphasized the importance of matching the platform to your specific goals and skills rather than just going with the most popular option. Out of curiosity, which platform would you personally recommend for someone who plans to focus heavily on SEO from the very beginning?

I would imagine that 100% of people looking to blog are wanting to focus on SEO from the beginning. WordPress is the global leader for a reason. That’s the platform I use, can’t go wrong! Thanks for the comment!

Do you think it’s better for a new blogger to start simple (like on Blogger or Medium) and “graduate” to something more customizable like WordPress later, or is it smarter to start with WordPress right away if you eventually want to grow a bigger blog? Also, for someone who cares a lot about SEO from the start, would you say WordPress is hands-down the best, or are there others that are still competitive?

WordPress is the global leader for a reason. That being said, if you’ve never built a website before, being able to focus on solely on the content like you can with Medium could make that your top pick for where to start. Thanks for the comment!
