Happy St. Paddy’s Day! In January of 2017 I started my online business journey because I wanted to travel the world. I wanted so badly to be able to say when I was old and grey that I had LIVED! I wanted to experience all the different cultures, see the amazing sights, try all the local favorite FOODS, drink the local BEERS, step into all the museums, visit the rich history, and take pictures and video every step of the way.
Fast forward to now and there’s no slowing down that travel itch. It’s like a worm in my brain! 24 countries and counting!
The really good thing about working from your laptop is that the second you open it, you’re instantly in your office, whether you’re on the white sands in Turks and Caicos, or chilling at Opera Bar in Sydney Harbor, or having several pints of the black in Temple Bar in Dublin for St. Paddy’s Day just like I did 5 years ago in 2019.
Ok so I definitely didn’t bring my laptop to the festivities in Dublin. This was a party to remember.
The whole city of Dublin is a never-ending party on St. Paddy’s. You walk into a pub and it’s a sea of people, shoulder to shoulder, music everywhere, everyone smiling, laughing, having a great time, Guinness flowing throughout, and when you exit the pub the sea of people doesn’t’ stop.
This wasn’t my typical solo adventure. My friend Julie from London (who I hadn’t actually met yet) said she’d take the short flight to meet me and had arrived in Dublin a couple days earlier. My buddy Josie from home had decided he couldn’t say no to St. Paddy’s in Dublin either and arrived with his girlfriend the day before I had.
I had literally just put my stuff down in the AirBnB (a day late because of flight delays where I had to stay overnight in Toronto) and minutes later I was off to go meet Julie at the pub. She was staying with a family she nannies for, and we met at a pub just outside Ha’penny Bridge.
We ate, we danced, we drank, we danced, we drank, we drank, we ate, we danced, we drank.
At one point, in a massively packed pub, I went to go find a restroom. This was a multi level pub, packed wall to wall, shoulder to shoulder, everyone with a Guinness in their hand. I made my way upstairs searching for the green sign that said “W.C.” (water closet). Upstairs it was somehow even more packed. I think everyone in Dublin was in this one pub, After I found the restroom I guess the Guinness and jet lag kicked in because I could not for the life of me find my way back downstairs.
I must have done like 20 laps on that upper level. I swear the stairwell I had just walked up like 10 minutes before was literally removed from existence. It was, and I’m being serious here, NOWHERE to be found. Every corner where I figured there should be a stairwell was just more and more people. I walked and walked and walked, sometimes looking down at the ground like I’d dropped a contact because I was SO SURE THERE’S A STAIRWELL SOMEWHERE IN HERE. I even stopped to grab a beer and try to reset my brain to make sense of it all.
“Ok I came in from that direction, walked through those people, there’s the restroom, it’s gotta be right over there.”
[Minutes later] Nope.
“I’m never going to find my way out of here for the rest of my life.”
I pulled back up to the bar and just accepted my fate.
I would never see my friends again.
They were good people and I hope they have a great life without me.
Thankfully, maybe an hour later, Josie and Julie found me. I think I even cried (I did mention all the Guinness and jet lag, right?).
I love Dubln. And now no St. Paddy’s Day party will ever come close. If you celebrate the festivities tonight (or maybe you were smart and did it last night) please be safe. We work so hard so that we can enjoy the special occasions and let loose a little, right? Just be careful.
I hope you have a great one!
Send me all your crazy St. Paddy’s pics. I’d love to see them!
