What Is the New Rich? How To Turn Your Passion Into Your Career

what is the new richHave you heard of the “New Rich”? Most people have, but aren’t exactly sure who they are. First of all, they’re not the ominous men in shadows running the world. Asking yourself “what is the New Rich?” can benefit you more than you probably imagine.

Most everyone is locked into the status quo when it comes to the daily routine. And for most it’s an absolute raw deal.

Work anywhere from 40-70 hours a week for someone else. Get two days off, if that, for yourself and your family. Then when you hit your 60s, you finally decide to retire at around a 40% pay cut from what you made when you were working.

This is when you realize all those dreams you had for retirement aren’t going to happen UNLESS YOU START WORKING AGAIN.

If you’re tired of that raw deal and want to know how to turn your own passion into your career instead of always working for someone else, this article is going to be an eye opener.

What Is the New Rich?

What is the new rich

Recently, a good friend of mine recommended I read the book “The 4 Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss. (Stop everything you’re doing right now and order this book. Seriously. It’s that good.)

When I read it, it opened my eyes. All the things I used to tell myself about how I could do the things I wanted to do were being bounced right back to me through this book.

Additionally, through this book I was introduced to the New Rich.

So who are the New Rich? Let’s define what we’re talking about using the author’s words themselves.

“The New Rich (NR) are those who abandon the deferred-life plan and create luxury lifestyles in the present using the currency of the New Rich: time and mobility.” – Tim Ferriss

Deferred life. Wow. When you put it that way it sounds so… sad. Yet so many people buy into it. Do you know people like this? Do any of the following statements sound familiar?

“Once I retire I’m going to buy myself an RV and travel across the country.”

“When I’m done with this job for good, I’m going to hit that bucket list and hit it hard.”

The New Rich don’t think like this. They beat the retirement myth, retiring rich and retiring young by dismissing this outdated concept of deferred life.

Why do we insist on putting things off until later? So many put such an emphasis money and working that they forget to live in the moment. Being career minded isn’t bad. But when it comes to life vs career, why do we believe you have to sacrifice one for the other?

Time and Mobility: The Currency of the New Rich

What is the new rich

Everybody shares the dream of being financially independent. But have you ever wondered why? Is it because we all love money? Probably not.

It’s because we all equate money with financial freedom and time freedom.

Isn’t that the real goal here? I mean, what’s all that money good for? It’s to spend it on the people we love, doing the things we love.

Given the choice of being a millionaire who spends all his time at his job, or being someone who makes ok money but can spend all his time doing what he loves, which would you pick? You’d choose the latter.

Yet, how ironic is it that to achieve our goal of spending time with our loved ones, we spend most of it away from them, working for someone else. And (maybe) we have a good weekend now and again doing whatever we want.

That’s 2 out of 7 days. That’s a raw deal.

The New Rich realize that time, mobility, and earning income can all overlap. Tim Ferriss knows this and speaks to it in his book. Anyone who has read it and is looking to be successful will agree. The key to having time, mobility, AND money is to be in business for yourself with a business that can come with you.

All the rewards from a life of hard work don’t have to wait until the end.

The New Rich Turn Passion Into Revenue

I love to go on vacations. But you know what the worst part about vacations is? Coming back to work.

Most people don’t think about mobility as the real reason behind why they’re not pursuing their dreams. If you’re a slave to your job you won’t have the mobility to accomplish it.

Tim Ferriss agrees that now more than ever before, working for yourself can be a reality.

If you’re really serious about this, you NEED to take a look at my #1 recommended platform for creating a consistent monthly revenue stream online. Their training is unmatched and they deliver.

Don’t hesitate. Do it.

Turning the internet into a tool that can bring you financial gain gives you both time and mobility. Now you’re dealing in the currency of the New Rich.

I wonder how much of this shift is generational. We all watched our parents work 9-5 jobs for someone else for the dream of a nice retirement. What’s the point of making millions when you never get a chance to enjoy them?!

    • Eric Cantu says:

If you want different results you have to change what you’re doing, right? We can’t follow exactly what everyone else is doing when we want something different? That’s why I promote Wealthy Affiliate the way I do. I’ve never come across another training platform so geared at helping its members succeed. Thank you for the insight!

  • Ninja Team says:

Here I see an expansion of 4-hour-work week. Good to know!!

  • Ravi says:

    Hey Eric,

I have the 4 hour work week but haven’t read it yet. Your post certainly wants me to go read it now!

Yes and time is the ultimate currency!!! Just got to get up and go do it!

    The new rich

I like it. And its so true. Making money on the mobile phone or internet really is the new way to create wealth. I think its also the funnest way as well. great post man, enjoyed it.

  • Wenda says:

OMG I LOVE THAT BOOK! It really changed how I think about making money, but the first book that turned my life around was Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I am always amazed when I think about all of the ways that we are taught to limit ourselves and that all of that can be changed, just by changing how we think about the things we think about. Great write up by the way.

    • Eric Cantu says:

Yes! I need to do a review of some more of the books that have inspired me. Rich Dad, Poor Dad is another good one. With 4 Hour Workweek I have it in my audiobooks and I’d listen to it every day when i took my dogs on their hour walk. He’s a great writer and not afraid to push the boundaries. I think more people need to think like that and trust in themselves for success. The path may be a steeper climb, but it’s so worth it in the end.

      Thanks for the comment Wenda!

  • Moon says:

    Hi Eric,

I have always wish to make money from the internet and also to travel the world with it. I certainly want to become a New Rich myself! However it seems difficult as I don’t know where to start. Thanks for your post, at least I have a direction now.

    • Eric Cantu says:

See that “Step 1” I wrote in the article up top? Follow that link and DO IT. Wealthy Affiliate has been a godsend for me. Don’t hesitate. You can check everything out free and they train you every step of the way. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Thank you for the comment! I appreciate it.

  • Can’t recommend this book enough. This book helps you realize your true idea of happiness isn’t centered around having a lot of money. Great article!

    • Eric Cantu says:

Yes! I love how he puts into perspective how we don’t all want to be “millionaires”, we all want to experience what millionaires experience! Chilling on an exotic beach. Taking a month long vacation. Why wait until the end of our life to do things that are actually possible now? It just takes a different perspective and the understanding that working for other people all our life is a raw deal.

For anyone on the fence struggling to gather this mindset, follow my step 1 above. WA is a game changer!

Thank you for the comment, Michael! I couldn’t have said it better myself.

  • Steven says:

That book was ahead of its time. I know exactly how to make use of the book now, four years after I first read it. I wasn’t doing any internet stuff back then…just playing video games.

  • Michael says:

Really love this read. A site like this one got me into wealthyaffiliate Again very clean and good informational site.

  • Greg says:

    Hi Eric,

    Thanks for the informative post.
I love the The 4 Hour Workweek”! This book and many others have changed the way I think as well.
Getting rid of limited beliefs and mindset is everything.
I look forward to more posts from your blog.

    • Eric Cantu says:

Mindset is everything. We seem to all be hypnotized into this raw deal of deferred life. I couldn’t agree with you more. Thanks for your support, Greg!

  • Shirley says:

“A raw deal” is putting it politely – it’s an absolute travesty that we only get two days a week for ourselves…and that we probably spend those days doing laundry and shopping and a whole bunch of BORING stuff, just so we can be ready for Monday. I’d much rather be joining the tribe of the new rich – thanks for the info!

    • Eric Cantu says:

Surely you can’t be serious! I am serious. And stop calling me Shirley. (You get that all the time don’t you, lol) I agree with you 100%. To think we somehow convince ourselves that since everyone else is doing it, it must be the only way. It’s a cycle that’s hard to break, but others ARE breaking it! He puts that into such perspective. Thank you Shirley!

  • Jeff Lewis says:

    Hello Eric!
I will admit, I am the “when I get here, I can do this” kind of guy. As we age it is getting tougher and tougher to see the doing this part of that equation. The new rich definitely brings an out of the box approach to conventional thinking!

The “you know what the worst part about vacations is? Coming back to work” hits home so close, it actually hurts. The wifey is constantly saying we need to get out and go, but coming back to work is a terrifying thought that always stops the vacation train. 🙁

Thanks for the information! The book really looks like a good read!

    • Eric Cantu says:

Gotta keep wifey happy, Jeff, lol! Get that book and hopefully you can make going back to work after vacation less scary cuz you’ll be the boss and I’m sure you won’t mind giving yourself a few more days with the wife, lol.

Make your phone your office! You’ve got the right mindset, Jeff, and for you I highly recommend checking out the review for Wealthy Affiliate above. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks for sharing, brother!

  • Nick Hoyt says:

Hey Eric, I also just read The 4-Hour Workweek! It is an amazing book that really changed the way I think about earning money.

Our society seems to push this idea that you need to “work your way up the corporate ladder” to be a success. But I’ve always just kind of wanted to do my own thing, you know? As long as you have enough money coming in each month, being able to do whatever you like, where ever you like is the ultimate freedom.

Making money online is definitely a great way to become one of the New Rich and gain that time and location independence. Thanks for the recommendation!

    • Eric Cantu says:

It’s a great book isn’t it. I have it on audiobook and listen when I’m driving or walking my dogs and I’m constantly saying “wow” out loud lol. Thanks for the comment, nick. I appreciate it.
