best compact digital camera for travel

When you travel, it’s a MUST to come back with great pics and video. In the age of social media sharing, you need to stand out in the crowd. What’s the best compact digital camera for travel? My answer may surprise you.

Vacations are already expensive. Adding to that budget by buying a new camera isn’t something that gets anyone excited.

But what if I told you that, more than likely, you already have the best compact digital camera for travel? What if I told you it might be in your hands right now?

In this article, I’m going to show you some pictures I took on some recent trips. First prepare to have your mind blown, and second, realize you’ll never worry about needing to shell out money for a DSLR to take on vacation again.

Why the iPhone 7 Plus is the Best Compact Digital Camera For Travel

How much does iPhone 7 Plus cost?

One of the top reasons for the iPhone 7 Plus being the best compact digital camera for travel is that you’re bringing a smart phone with you on vacation anyway. This means it’s not an additional expense. And if you don’t happen to already have the iPhone 7 Plus, after this review you’ll have good reason to be ordering one.

Amazon might be the most reliable merchant for getting an unlocked iPhone.
Check pricing and availability through the link below.

An unlocked phone means being able to use a provider of your choice. Also, many cellular providers allow you to lease your phone for a monthly fee on top of your monthly bill.

The key to the cost factor is multipurposing your phone. You are adding zero added cost to any already expensive trip.

And while there are other smartphones out there, the iPhone simply beats them when it comes to overall photo quality and user friendliness.

What are the best iPhone 7 Plus features?

There are many features that make this phone the best choice for traveling. I’ll be covering its size and durability, user friendliness, and its ability to turn out extremely high quality photo and video.

Compact / No Extra Bulk:

Don’t get me wrong. I love DSLRs.

But you can’t fit a DSLR into your pocket, and even the “gigantic” iPhone 7 Plus fits easily into your pocket.

Not needing to have a camera bag with extra lenses, batteries, or even needing to have a camera itself around your neck is huge when it comes to traveling.

And let’s not forget the entrepreneurial minded travelers. If you fall into that category, then your phone is your office and should be on your person always.

Why not make it a one stop shop and enjoy it as your camera as well?

Splash and Water Resistant:

There is a big difference between water resistant and waterproof.

The iPhone 7 Plus isn’t meant to take with you underwater for those awesome underwater pics (although equipped in the right waterproof case this can be accomplished).

Water resistant basically means you won’t have to freak out when it comes to spills, splashes or dust damaging your all in one office/camera for travel.

Even a quick dunk into your morning coffee should be fine as long as you get it out and dry it off quick enough. And that’s with no case to protect it whatsoever.

I know some girls who like to keep their phone in their back pocket without a case.

Don’t do this.

Anywhere else but your back pocket will do. You can actually bend it over time by sitting down on it if it’s not in any kind of case. Also, your back pocket is a very easy target for pickpockets in crowded touristy spots.

Duct tape it to your forehead for all I care just don’t keep it back there.

While I prefer a minimal bumper case that leaves most of the phone visible (why would you want to completely cover up an $800 piece of technology in $20 worth of plastic), there are a huge variety of styles to choose from that offer substantial protection.

Big, bright display:

I personally love a big, bright display to take a look at pictures right after I’ve shot them. iPhone 7 Plus definitely has that.

It’s bigger and brighter than any display you’ll find on a DSLR.

Also, don’t forget that when you’re out in the bright sunlight instead of squinting at what looks like a dark display, turn that brightness all the way up so you can review your pics!

I used to always be the squinting guy.

I’d take the shot, then take off my shades and squint trying to see through the sun’s bright glare on the screen to see if I got the shot right. I got smart and realized a quick swipe up from the bottom of the screen would get me to my brightness controls.

No more squinting 🙂

Picture Quality:

Without picture quality what good are any of the other features right?

The iPhone 7 Plus definitely delivers here with quality photo and video features that put it a step above other smartphones. These features make any drop-off in photo quality as compared with a DSLR aLindt nonexistent.

    Hi Eric,

Great review on the iPhone 7 Plus! I am very impressed with the quality of pictures and specially videos. Is it possible to edit videos on the iPhone 7 Plus let’s say to create a simple video marketing? I also share your passion for travelling and always hit the road whenever I can. My only concern with taking all pics with my phone is the memory. That’s why I still bring my old good Canon with me every time I travel. Any tips on how to solve that?

    • Eric Cantu says:

Great questions, Marta. The video editing capabilities on iMovie are incredible and high quality, so you can definitely use them for video marketing. How intricate you get is only limited to how good you are with the app, and it’s pretty user friendly so I’m sure you only get better and better the more you played with it.

I try to travel a lot, so as you can probably imagine I take a ton of photos and video on my phone. I currently have 3,738 photos and 150 videos on the phone and I’m nowhere near capacity. I still have 77 GB available out of 128.

I think I’ll add this info to the post actually 🙂 thanks for the great questions.

  • Brandon says:

Hey Eric. I’ll be travelling in a year or so, so I’m not exactly in the need for a camera yet. However, your review has really got me interested, and surprised to say the least, as you so bluntly put it in the title 😛 I had no idea that the best digital camera would be an iPhone! I can definitely agree with you though, especially after seeing the example photos that you have shown us.

What a great article, thank you so much for the great info!

  • Veri says:

Woah! Those pictures are ridiculously amazing.! I own a iphone6 and have come to expect that the iPhone does not take awesome pics like the Samsung phones lol. After reading your reviews and actually seeing the pictures i am thinking about an upgrade. Great review on the camera 🙂

    • Eric Cantu says:

The 7 Plus with its dual cameras really does turn heads. I’ve shown guys at work my vacation photos and they are always asking me if I really only used the iPhone after seeing the photo quality. The HD video is ultra clear too even on a big screen HD tv.

  • Monika says:

    Hi Eric,
I am a photographer and lug around my DSLR but when I want to capture some quick photos I use my iPhone 6 it takes some amazing photos when the conditions are right.
I am looking to upgrade to the iPhone 7 or wait for the anniversary 10 will see. It is nice to have a compact camera read-ally available.
Great information… What you are doing is where I am working to be. to be able to travel, take photos and earn a living online.
    Great site.

    • Eric Cantu says:

The iPhone 7 Plus with its dual cameras really was a game changer when it came to the camera’s abilities. I can definitely at it’s worth it and can only imagine what the 10 year anniversary will bring. I’m sure every year I’ll basically be rewriting this article with a new review of the latest model. Thanks for the comment!

  • Neil Brooks says:

Hi Eric, this is fantastic review, the photos are just incredible, so vibrant and so detailed, it is hard to imagine that these are from a phone, camera and software have come such a long way.

    regards

    Neil

  • Jeff says:

Wow, all those pics are with your I phone? Pretty cool.
You should put captions underneath so we know where the picture is taken. The one in China makes me want to go visit there. I’ve never been to that side of the world.
    Nice post

    • Eric Cantu says:

You know i think I’ll go back and add captions now that you mention it. That’s a good idea. One was in Tokyo, the others were in Greece, and the last one of my dog Shiner is here at the beach at home 🙂

  • Luis says:

WOW. Amazing review! This gave me a whole new insight on IPhone cameras. Those examples you showed were amazing. This review was a huge help looks like I wont be needing to invest a couple hundred dollars for my camping trip this spring!
